(Crutch Walking) 4~Q/"hMSkO
Crutches are often needed to increase a client's mobility. The use of PB\x3pV!}
crutches may be temporary (such as after ligament damage to the knee) or \(2sW^fY
permanent (as with paralysis of the lower extremities). It is important that oW6XF-yM
crutches be measured for the appropriate length that clients be taught how P71Lqy)5}A
to use them correctly. WNrk}LFof
E+;7>ja

3. Position crutch handgrips with elbows flexed at 20- to 25-degree angle. M9%$lCl
Ankle of elbow flexion should be verified by goniometer e+fN6v5pU

\Yr Ue1
5. Instruct client to assume tripod stance. Tripod stance is formed when )zDCu`
crutches are placed 15 cm (6 inches) in front 15 cm to side of each foot NC6&x=!3
Improves balance by providing wider base of support. No weight should be e~"U @8xk~

b.Three-point alternating, or three-point gait, requires client to bear all `N8O"UcoBo
weight on one foot. Weight is borne on uninvolved leg, then on both crutches, &_8947
the sequence is repeated. Affected leg does not touch ground during early <(#ej4ar,
phase of three-point gait. Gradually client progresses to touchdown full |CbikE}kL
weight bearing on affected leg 0#gK6o!
c.Two-point gait requires at least partial weight bearing on each foot. {?7Uj
Client moves each crutch at same time as opposing leg so crutch movements are NDokSw-
similar to arm motion during normal walking YtLt*Ig%
d. Swing-through, or swing-to gait is frequently used by paraplegics who ;}p
wear weight-supporting braces on their legs. With weight on supported legs, the hOK8(U

client places crutches one stride in front then swings to or through them Lu%b9Jk
while they support his weight. [()koU#w.

KKf
