2015吉林大学考博英语真题阅读理解精练 dlW w=^
Bernard Bailyn has recently reinterpreted the early history of the tSg#2
United States by applying new social research findings on the ^WeT3b q
experiences of European migrants. In his reinterpretation, migration i->sw#
becomes the organizing principle for rewriting the history of YB 4R8}4
preindustrial North America. His approach rests on four separate P`"dj@1'
propositions. }n<dyX:a
The first of these asserts that residents of early modern England I*#~@:4*
moved regularly about their countryside; migrating to the New World H[Qh*pq2
was simply a “natural spillover”. Although at first the colonies 6sPd")%G
held little positive attraction for the English — they would rather S`J_}>
have stayed home — by the eighteenth century people increasingly 'aCnj8B
migrated to America because they regarded it as the land of 4 Hu+ljdjB
opportunity. Secondly, Bailyn holds that, contrary to the notion that vv3dr_l:
used to flourish in America history textbooks, there was never a N8KHNTb-M
typical New World community. For example, the economic and @50Js3R1q
demographic character of early New England towns varied considerably. qOng?(I
Bailyn’s third proposition suggest two general patterns ^ML2xh
prevailing among the many thousands of migrants: one group came as 0[PP -]JS
indentured servants, another came to acquire land. Surprisingly, Vbwbc5m}
Bailyn suggests that those who recruited indentured servants were the 2bCa|HTv
driving forces of transatlantic migration. These colonial p>MX}^6
entrepreneurs helped determine the social character of people who *EotYT
came to preindustrial North America. At first, thousands of unskilled w PV`j:?'
w("jyvV[C
laborers were recruited; by the 1730’s, however, American employers (V | P6C
demanded skilled artisans. oVLz7Y[JE
Finally, Bailyn argues that the colonies were a half-civilized |o+vpy
hinterland of the European culture system. He is undoubtedly correct (US8Sc
to insist that the colonies were part of an Anglo-American empire. U_14CLs dG
But to divide the empire into English core and colonial periphery, <q_H 3|
as Bailyn does, devalues the achievements of colonial culture. It is YpuA,r;"
true, as Bailyn claims, that high culture in the colonies never Ue8_Q8q5
matched that in England. But what of seventeenth-century New England, 9%)'QDVGLf
where the settlers created effective laws, built a distinguished FL`. (,
university, and published books? Bailyn might respond that New J,E&Uz95%
England was exceptional. However, the ideas and institutions L:'Y#VI{
developed by New England Puritans had powerful effects on North t);5Cw _
American culture. o]jo R3
Although Bailyn goes on to apply his approach to some thousands *aTM3k)Zs
of indentured servants who migrated just prior to the revolution, he 60hf)er
fails to link their experience with the political development of the 8l?]UFM>C
United States. Evidence presented in his work suggests how we might 4$_8#w B1&
make such a connection. These indentured servants were treated as u |#ruFR
slaves for the period during which they had sold their time to American q/]tJ{FI
employers. It is not surprising that as soon as they served their time rPQ$e!m1Ee
they passed up good wages in the cities and headed west to ensure their r"rEVx#1=
personal independence by acquiring land. Thus, it is in the west that FmnA+fA
a peculiarly American political culture began, among colonists who HI:E&20y
O" T1=4
were suspicious of authority and intensely anti-aristocratic. }De)_E\~
